Becoming A Cultural Hotspot
Small towns around the world have demonstrated how a focus on performing arts and unique cultural experiences can elevate a community and attract global attention. Through festivals and cultural events, these towns inspire both artists and visitors, sparking creativity and driving economic growth. Hønefoss, with its dynamic cultural scene, has the potential to develop into a renowned international arts destination. By supporting local initiatives and fostering collaboration among cultural organizations, the town can position itself as a hub of creativity and inspiration, attracting talent and audiences from all over the world.

Nøkken – A Unique Stage in a Dramatic Landscape
At the heart of this vision is Nøkken, a proposed open-air stage set against the powerful and ever-changing waterfalls. Designed with a focus on contemporary dance, it offers a unique interplay between nature, performances, and the audience. Inspired by Elling M. Solheim’s poetry, the stage integrates the dramatic shifts of water, rock, and seasons as part of the artistic expression.

The architecture is rooted in the site’s natural conditions, with locally sourced wood and stone reinforcing its connection to Hønefoss’s history. The seating follows the natural topography, minimizing environmental impact while ensuring excellent visibility. Paths and existing sculptures are carefully integrated into the new design.

Nøkken adapts to different performances and seasons, offering dance, concerts, theater, markets, and outdoor cinema in summer, while in winter it hosts ice skating, exhibitions, and festive events. When the falls are at their peak, dance performances can merge with the sound of rushing water; when dry, the exposed riverbed provides a striking backdrop for theatrical and musical performances. With its breathtaking setting and versatility, Nøkken can place Hønefoss on the cultural world map—creating a destination where art and nature merge in an extraordinary way.
